Salisbury & South Wiltshire Tourism
The city of Salisbury was set in the ancient kingdom of Wessex. It offers an interesting mix of architecture, from tudor buildings through to elegant
Georgian town houses.
However, the city is best known for the tall spire of it's Cathedral and for the nearby world heritage site
of Stonehenge.
Popular attractions include:-
- Arundells - the home of former Prime Minster, Ted Heath, now open to
visitors
- Mompesson House, a National Trust property, used for the filming of Sense &
Sensibility
- Old Sarum - where the old Cathedral was built, this earthworks overlooks the city
and has great views on a clear day
- Old Wardour Castle - owned by English Heritage, this is the epitome of the
romantic ruined castle
- Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum - with excellent archaeology & costume
collections, perfect to complement your visit to Stonehenge
- The Rifles Museum - the museum for the Berkshire & Wiltshire rifles
- Wilton House - "the situation of Wilton House is incomparably noble" having
"the most pleasant prospect", this was the description given by John Aubrey in the 16th century and the
same can be said in the 21st century also.
A short drive through the New Forest (Englands smallest national park) takes you to the seaside
resorts of Bournemouth, Poole & Christchurch.
The county of Dorset, including Dorchester & Swanage are just an hour or two away. The Isle of
Wight is just a ferry trip from Lymington, on the coast.
